At Red Mountain Radio, we engineered a custom loop-excited slot antenna for a leading manufacturer of wearable devices. This innovative antenna design dramatically enhanced Bluetooth range, outperforming standard off-the-shelf chip antenna solutions. Our project encompassed the complete antenna design as well as the development of a tailored RF matching network to optimize impedance matching with the Bluetooth RFIC.

Microwave Photonics

Microwave photonics integrates RF/microwave engineering with photonics to process microwave signals using optical technologies, enabling efficient generation, transmission, and processing of high-frequency signals. This is crucial for advanced communications, radar systems, and sensing applications. Red Mountain Radio’s Eric Funk has been at the forefront of this field. He is a chapter contributor to the definitive text on the field [1].

It should be no surprise that Red Mountain Radio's photonics research has led to significant advancements. In 2008, we pioneered a method for probing petroleum well fracture geometry in harsh, high-temperature downhole environments where conventional electronics fail. Our patented technique uses a casing-mounted probe driven by a custom radar signal transmitted to well depth via specialized high-temperature fiber [2]. And now at Red Mountain Radio, we're hard at work on the next advance, a novel optical signal processing technique to improve physical layer security (PLS) in next-gen ultra-wideband mm-wave wireless and fiber telecommunications. This ongoing work addresses the limitations of SSL/TLS, which doesn’t guard against physical layer threats linked to infrastructure, hardware, and key certification vulnerabilities. Publications are forthcoming.

Millimeter Wave

Millimeter-wave (mm-wave) technology (> 24 GHz) is critically important to the electronics industry due to its transformative impact on various applications. This includes increased wireless data rates for 5G and beyond, automotive radar for autonomous vehicles, healthcare imaging, aeronautics, and V2X (Vehicle-to-everything) communication.

At Red Mountain Radio, we recently engineered a 24 GHz Doppler radar system for real-time jet engine wear monitoring. The system was designed to oeprate in the Upper Microwave Flexible Use Service band. We completed the circuit design process—spanning RF, digital, and interface design—from concept to prototyping, testing, and firmware development. This complex project incorporated custom filters and met rigorous requirements for low phase noise.
